Three regulation NFL games could go on simultaneously in the new space that's recently been added to The Edge Fitness Club at 542 Westport Ave. in Norwalk. And there would still be room left over for cheerleaders or concession stands -- that's how spacious the new facility is.

No football games will actually go on there, except perhaps on the large, flat-screen televisions at the Edge Cafe, the beverage and snack bar near the front entrance. But just about every other sport or fitness activity imaginable is incorporated into the cavernous facility, which had a grand re-opening on Monday with a ribbon-cutting attended by Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia.

The club was bursting at the seams at its former size and managers knew they had to add on or move to a larger facility.

"We didn't want to leave," marketing director Nicole Falco said. "We wanted to give something more to the members. We wanted to grow and we had the ability to. Space became available and we jumped on it."

Managers expanded some areas, added new features in others -- such as an artificial turf training section -- and purchased new cardio and weight equipment.

"We've always offered Pilates, but the new expansion has allowed The Edge to create a designated studio for Pilates and Pilates reformer (group classes)," Falco said. "We also expanded our mind-body studio (for yoga) and the Kidz Kare room has gotten a face lift.

"And we put in a new training system called the Ring of Fire, an interval-based program with rings, monkey bars, ropes, kettle bells, weights and more. It's like an adult jungle gym."

The group exercise area was expanded by 30 percent for classes such as Zumba, kickboxing and boot camp. There is a boxing studio and a new spinning studio, as well as two cardio decks.

With 30,000 square feet, hundreds of members can do squats, thrusts, sprints and downward dogs and not encroach on their neighbor's personal space.

"There's a lot of space. Before, it was cramped," Erica Hines, of Norwalk, said of one of the new exercise studios. "You feel like you get a better workout now," added Hines, a three-year member who exercises every day at The Edge. "Twice on Wednesdays."

The Edge first opened in Norwalk in 1997 and shortly after began accumulating annual Best Health Club Readers' Poll awards -- 11 consecutively, 12 in all.

"I love it; a lot more space for functional training," said Joel Clark, of Fairfield, while taking a brief break from dragging a heavily weighted sled across the turf to work on his upper-body strength. "This is much more like an outdoor area, like a functional gym to do wind sprints and sled drags and pulls."
